Grilled Fava Beans

We have a mysterious crop of favas coming up in our garden. I am 99% sure I planted peas, but tucked among them are favas. They are beautiful plants. The flowers are dark purple, the leaves broad, and the long, stout beans grow out directly from the stock. The thick, protective shell hides the large creamy beans.

After reading 101 cookbook's recipe for grilled favas I knew I had to try this recipe. I adore favas, but really hate the work that goes into preparing them. Generally, you have to shell the beans, and peal off the thin skin that coats the beans. This recipes lets you skip all of that and just slip the beans out of their shells, already cooked, like edemame. Toss the beans with olive oil and salt. Grill in a basket until slightly charred. Pop the beans out and enjoy!

While you have the grill on, try out this recipe for Grilled Romaine Salad. It will knock your socks off and impress your guests. :)
Have you discovered an interesting new veggie or technique this summer? Do tell!

  1. I love the idea of your mysterious favas! Do you think the seeds somehow got mixed up?
